Kawasaki has a BA from Stanford University, an MBA from UCLA, and an honorary doctorate from Babson College.
Guy Kawasaki was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1954. His family lived in a tough part of Honolulu called Kalihi Valley, but he never felt poor because his parents made many sacrifices. His mother was a housewife, and his father had a long and distinguished career as a fireman, real estate broker, state senator, and government official. Guy attended Iolani School and graduated in 1972, where he received a fantastic education. He owes his writing career to his AP English teacher, Harold Keables, who taught him the importance of editing.
After graduating from Iolani, Guy went to Stanford University and graduated in 1976 with a major in psychology. He then attended the law school at U.C Davis but only lasted one week because he couldn't handle the teachers telling him he was not good enough. The following year, he entered the MBA program at UCLA and enjoyed it much more. During this time, he worked for a fine-jewelry manufacturer called Nova Stylings, where he learned how to sell.
Guy's career took off when he joined Apple and became an evangelist for the Macintosh. He worked there for four years, evangelizing Macintosh to developers and meeting his wife. After leaving Apple, he started a Macintosh database company called ACIUS and ran it for two years before pursuing his passion for writing, speaking, and consulting. He wrote for publications like MacUser, Macworld, and Forbes.
In 1989, Guy started another software company called Fog City Software, where they created email and list server products. He returned to Apple in 1995 as an Apple fellow, tasked with maintaining and rejuvenating the Macintosh cult. In 1997, he left Apple again to start Garage.com, an angel investor matchmaking service. Today, Garage.com is known as Garage Technology Ventures, a venture capital firm.
In 2004, Guy began writing and speaking full-time and started another company called Alltop, which aggregates RSS feeds and organizes them into topics. In 2013, he became a special advisor to the CEO of the Motorola division of Google. In 2014, he joined Canva, a Sydney-based company that provides an online graphic design service. He also became a brand ambassador for Mercedes Benz USA in 2015. In the same year, he joined the board of trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation to help democratize knowledge.
Overall, Guy Kawasaki has had a diverse and successful career, with a focus on technology, writing, speaking, and consulting. He has made significant contributions to companies like Apple and Canva and continues to be a prominent figure in the tech industry.
